Introduces the main family of South Carolina and the Hazard Family of Pennsylvania. The families are basically different. The Mains from the South grow rice and represent the old ways while the Hazards of the North produce iron and are examples of the Industrial Revolution. Their paths converge however, when Orry Main meets George Hazard as the two are entering West Point in 1842. Their friendship is immediate and strong. Orry's family owns slaves, and george, while loving his friend, cannot understand it. As the years pass each grows more entrenched in his beliefs. Additionally George's sister Virgilia, an avowed abolitionist, seeks to pry the friendship apart and nearly succeeds. George and orry struggles are representative of that which plagues the nation.
